MOTS-c is a mitochondrially encoded peptide consisting of 16 amino acids, first described by Professor Changhan David Lee in 2015. It is the first known mitochondrial peptide that acts as a signaling molecule, penetrating the cell nucleus and regulating gene expression there.

Mechanism of action

The peptide activates the AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) signaling pathway, the cell's central energy sensor. This regulates glucose and lipid metabolism, stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis, and improves insulin sensitivity. Under cellular stress, it translocates to the nucleus and activates antioxidant genes via Nrf2- and ARE-dependent mechanisms.

Research applications

  • Metabolic research and diabetology
  • Aging research (endogenous levels decrease with age)
  • Skeletal muscle homeostasis and bone metabolism
  • Examination of type 2 diabetes, obesity and mitochondrial dysfunction

Reconstitution: Example calculation

For a working concentration of 10 mg/ml, the 40 mg vial is reconstituted with 4 ml of sterile bacteriostatic water (BAC water). Slowly inject the water along the inside of the vial and gently swirl it instead of shaking.

Frequently Asked Questions

For which experimental series is the 40 mg dose suitable?
The 40 mg dose is designed for long-term trials: A single vial covers longer test series and thus reduces the reconstitution effort.

Does MOTS-C differ structurally from other research peptides in the product range?
Yes — MOTS-C is mitochondrially encoded rather than nuclearly, which makes it a separate research subject within mitochondrial pathway research.

Quality assurance

Each production batch undergoes independent dual testing: HPLC analysis to determine purity and LC-MS analysis to definitively verify molecular mass and correct peptide sequence. Only after passing this test is a batch released.
