PT-141 10mg – Melanocortin receptor agonist for libido research
PT-141 (bremelanotide) is a cyclic heptapeptide and metabolite of melanotan II — developed from research at the University of Arizona (Hadley/Dorr) and clinically further developed by Palatin Technologies. As a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist (MC1R/MC3R/MC4R), it acts centrally on the regulation of sexual desire, unlike PDE5 inhibitors, which act peripherally on blood flow.
This 10mg vial is suitable for research approaches related to melanocortin receptor pharmacology and central regulatory mechanisms of libido.
Mechanism of action
PT-141 activates the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) in the hypothalamus, which plays a central role in regulating sexual desire and arousal. Unlike phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil), which work by improving blood flow, PT-141 acts directly on the central nervous system pathways that mediate desire and arousal—independent of the vascular nitric oxide signaling pathway.

For a working concentration of 10 mg/ml, the 10 mg vial is reconstituted with 1 ml of sterile bacteriostatic water (BAC water). Slowly inject the water along the inside of the vial and gently swirl it instead of shaking.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does PT-141 differ from Melanotan II?
Both peptides share the same cyclic core structure, but PT-141 has a free carboxylic acid (-OH) at the C-terminus instead of an amide (-NH₂) like Melanotan II. This change shifts the receptor profile more strongly towards MC4R-mediated libido effects, while Melanotan II has a more pronounced effect on MC1R (pigmentation).
What is PT-141 being studied for in research?
PT-141 is used to investigate central nervous system mechanisms of sexual desire and arousal independent of the vascular system — the basis of the bremelanotide formulation (Vyleesi) approved by the FDA in 2019 for the treatment of HSDD in women.
Quality assurance
Each production batch undergoes independent dual testing: HPLC analysis to determine purity and LC-MS analysis to definitively verify molecular mass and correct peptide sequence. Only after passing this test is a batch released.
